Meet Dr. Kumar
For more than three decades, Dr. Anil Kumar has served the people of Metro Detroit as a respected urologist, educator, and community leader. From his early days as an immigrant pursuing the American dream to his role as a physician and hospital leader, Dr. Kumar’s life story is rooted in service, opportunity, and hard work. The same values that drive his campaign for Congress in Michigan’s 11th District.
Dr. Kumar earned his Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Medicine, and Master of Surgery degrees from the University of Bombay before moving to Michigan to continue his medical training. Appointed as a research fellow in the Department of Urology at Wayne State University, he went on to complete his residency in urology and a fellowship in transplant surgery.
After his training, Dr. Kumar founded his private practice in Rochester Hills, where for over 30 years he has cared for thousands of Michigan families. In addition to his medical practice, he has dedicated his career to mentoring the next generation of physicians as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Michigan State University and site director for the Urology Residency Program at Crittenton Hospital. His leadership in medicine includes serving as Chief of Staff at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital, Chief of Surgery at Crittenton Hospital, and Chief of Staff at North Oakland Medical Center.
As a lifelong advocate for better healthcare and stronger communities, Dr. Kumar understands firsthand how broken our healthcare system has become and how politicians in Washington have failed to fix it. His campaign is guided by the belief that quality, affordable healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and that education is the foundation of opportunity.
Dr. Kumar is running for Congress to bring real-world expertise, compassion, and accountability to Washington — to stand up to MAGA extremists who have jeopardized the healthcare of millions of Americans, and to challenge weak Democrats who have lost touch with the people they represent.
Dr. Kumar began his Michigan journey at Wayne State University, where his talent, determination, and work ethic quickly set him apart. It was there that he met his wife, Marjorie, who was then a medical student. Together, they have built a life defined by giving, contributing, and raising two sons who continue that same legacy of service and purpose.
What began as a dream from humble and uncertain beginnings became a disciplined pursuit of learning, growth, and service. Through decades of hard work, Dr. Kumar has healed, taught, and uplifted — turning his own journey from disadvantage into a lifelong mission to lift up others. His story is proof that the American dream is not only possible, but powerful — when lived in service to others and in devotion to the community that made it possible.
Today, Dr. Kumar lives in Bloomfield Hills and continues to serve patients across Rochester Hills, Pontiac, and Troy. As a doctor, educator, and community leader, he has spent his life healing and improving lives, mentoring future generations, and standing up for those without a voice. Now, he’s ready to take that same commitment to Congress - fighting for healthcare reform that puts patients before profit, for educational opportunity that lifts every family, and for a future built on fairness, dignity, and progress for everyone in Michigan’s 11th District.
